Bradley's full tank gives Twins the edge over Tigers on August 31

The Minnesota Twins have the cleaner pitching map for a divisional opener with little margin left in the Wild Card race. The Detroit Tigers arrive with a thinned lineup and a starter whose stuff may outlast his permitted workload.

Bradley gives the Twins length and multiple shapes

Taj Bradley is listed to start on normal rest after producing double-digit strikeouts and the first recorded immaculate inning in Twins history. The arsenal was livelier than the losing decision suggests. Damaging contact, not a shortage of missed bats, spoiled the line.

Bradley has already shown a useful plan against the Tigers, moving from the high fastball to his splitter, cutter and curve when command wobbled. Those different shapes matter against left-handed hitters Kevin McGonigle, Colt Keith and Max Clark, who cannot simply sit on one speed.

The Twins ended a four-game skid Sunday after losing seven of eight, but Byron Buxton was placed on the injured list because his recurring right hip impingement “has not gotten better,” as reported by mlb.com. Walker Jenkins now takes over in center, bringing range and speed but not Buxton's established offensive impact. Minnesota remains outside the final Wild Card spot and cannot afford another poor divisional series.

Sunday's long outing from Zebby Matthews also reset the relief corps, with only Jeff Hoffman needed for a short finish. The Twins should have nearly their entire leverage group behind Bradley, even if the ninth-inning hierarchy remains fluid.

Jobe's innings matter as much as his stuff

Jackson Jobe is listed as the Tigers' probable starter, but he only returned from Tommy John surgery in early August after roughly fourteen months of rehabilitation. His comeback has been managed carefully, with an early hook posing a greater concern than a scratch. The fastball and four-pitch mix looked electric upon his return, though the workload remains the larger issue.

Jobe encountered traffic, issued free passes and was removed during the fifth inning in his latest appearance. His refined curveball helped him escape trouble, but a left-handed Twins order can make him work across the plate and drive up the pitch count.

The Tigers remain without Riley Greene and Kerry Carpenter, while Matt Vierling's rehabilitation has been slowed by heel soreness, according to mlb.com. McGonigle has carried much of the current offense, delivering Saturday's walk-off and driving in the Tigers' only run Sunday. Clark adds speed, while Javier Báez continues to contribute defensive value around the diamond and in left field.

Four Tigers relievers worked Sunday, and Andrew Sears had already supplied extended relief Saturday. Kenley Jansen and Tyler Holton are rested, but an abbreviated Jobe start could expose the more heavily used section of the bullpen before those late-inning arms enter.

Target Field offers no weather shortcut

First pitch is scheduled for 7:40 PM ET, with the game beginning around twilight and finishing under the lights. The forecast is dry, leaving little postponement concern. Target Field is open-air and sensitive to late-summer conditions, but reliable game-hour wind information is not yet available.

This is the opener of a three-game series, and neither club carries getaway-day restrictions. The Tigers have a short trip after Sunday's home game, while the Twins remain at Target Field.

The middle innings point toward the Twins

The key is the handoff from Jobe to the Tigers' bullpen. Minnesota can stack left-handed and switch-hitting bats, force longer plate appearances and reach middle relief before Jansen becomes relevant. That pressure is more valuable on the moneyline than as a bet requiring the Twins to score a fifth run without Buxton.

Bradley offers the more dependable workload against a Tigers order missing Greene and Carpenter. If he gives Minnesota ordinary length, the rested bullpen provides several ways to protect a lead rather than asking one fixed closer to handle every difficult out.

The risk is Bradley's command: missed locations can turn excellent swing-and-miss stuff into loud barrel contact. Jobe can also suppress the Twins while he is in the game, especially if his curveball lands for strikes.
