One player wins ugly, the other survives on return
Valentova arrived here by handing a full set to a qualifier, Arseneault, and then needing a tiebreak in which her opponent held a run of set points. That was not a one-off. There were first sets lost 1-6 to Joint and 2-6 to Bouzkova, a set she could not serve out in Cincinnati, and a decider dropped 0-6 to Svitolina after seven match points came and went.
The mechanism is her serve: a low first-serve percentage and a reliable supply of double faults, which hands out break points without the opponent doing much. Tian is built to collect exactly those. She took her opener with six breaks, after losing a long first set, and she does not disintegrate once a set is gone.
Where seven games are supposed to come from
Tian's month has been thin — modest opposition, a broken schedule, a recent loss to a qualifier — and she is not going to out-hit anyone from the baseline. She does not have to. She needs six or seven games across two sets against a server who regularly gives them away.
The risk is real: heat near 30 degrees speeds the court up and rewards Valentova's first strike, and when she settles she can run through a second set. The price on the cushion still looks too cheap.
